Root & Rise Rambles #1: Hello and Welcome
Firstly, I would like to kick things off by saying a massive thank you to everyone who has visited the new website or signed up to the Root and Rise mailing list. Your first newsletter arrived in your inbox on the first of the month, and the second will follow on the 1st of August. I have many more exciting updates and content to share with you in the coming months!
Additionally, I would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended my talk, Follow Your Nose: A Journey Through Essential Oils and Memory at Pursuits Festival in Warwick on Sunday 7th June. I thoroughly enjoyed giving everyone Indian Head Massages and connecting with so many wonderful people.
Welcome to the blog!
This is your space to slow down for a few minutes in a comfortable space, grab a cup of tea and relax as I share with you tips on how to be more mindful, ways in which you can be kinder to yourself and your body at home, and my own personal musings about holistic treatments, essential oils and massages. I will also be sharing any important updates and changes with you as my business grows and evolves. Exciting times are ahead and I look forward to showing you how things will progress in the coming months.
And so, without further ado, make yourself comfy and read along…
For when the world starts to feel a little uncomfortable:
We’ve all been there. Those strange days where things sometimes feel unfamiliar, or slightly off.
And when it happens, I have found that going back to those small, often overlooked areas can be very grounding. They can ground you and remind you that you are in fact safe - despite your reptilian brain telling you otherwise!
On Wednesday, I chose to listen to a mindset podcast that focuses my mind on what I want. I chose to do EFT tapping to calm my nervous system. I breathed in the sweet floral aroma of Ylang Ylang to soothe my emotions, followed by the fresh, herbaceous scent of Rosemary to support my mental clarity and memory.
And when I did, I found that I had slowed down enough to start noticing those smaller things again:
My chicks were all flocked together playing on the lawn.
I Rested my hand on the tree I park beside every school-run morning.
The warmth of the sun on my face felt nice, as well as each step as my feet met the pavement - even the simple satisfaction of resetting the display shelf in my treatment room.
I also felt the strength of human connection whilst talking on a zoom call with my Weird AF business mastermind buddies.
When we intentionally engage our senses, we invite ourselves back into the present moment. And often, that’s enough to shift how the whole day feels.
So… If life feels a little overwhelming today, perhaps choose just one thing you can see, hear, smell, touch or taste, and allow yourself to be fully present with it for a moment.
What is something you could do to help you feel more grounded today?
This Weeks’ Thursday Thoughts
Who else has felt the need to bring out all the tools in their wellbeing toolkit this week?
As we edge closer to the end of the school year, life can feel even more overwhelming than usual.
The school events.
The endless to-do lists.
The work deadlines.
The emotional load of holding everything together for everyone else.
Somewhere along the way, we convince ourselves that we have to do it all…and do it perfectly.
But here’s what I want you to know today…
You are seen. You are heard. You are loved.
This past week has been a storm for me, and since Sunday I’ve found myself leaning into every single tool I have. Not because I’ve failed, but because I’ve learnt that asking my nervous system what it needs is one of the kindest things I can do.
Here’s what’s been helping me…
Breathing techniques because we all know what happens when we’re stressed. Our breathing becomes shallow, our shoulders creep up towards our ears and our bodies stay stuck in survival mode. A few slow, intentional breaths can bring oxygen back into the body and often lead to that wonderful, deep sigh that says, “I’m safe.”
Essential oils have been by my side every day. Lavender, Geranium, Rosemary, Petitgrain, Frankincense and Ylang Ylang have helped soothe my emotions, bring mental clarity, ease physical tension and remind me to pause.
Grounding through my senses. Really noticing the colours around me. The shapes of the trees. Feeling the warmth of the sunshine on my face or the breeze against my skin. Rooting my feet into the pavement as I walk. These simple practices help bring me back into my body whenever I start to feel disconnected or experience those “out of body” sensations.
Listening to mindset podcasts, music that lifts my soul or calming instrumental and classical music. Sound has an incredible ability to regulate our nervous system and gently guide us back to a place of calm.
Movement. Not to burn calories or punish my body, but to move the adrenaline and stress that builds up inside. Whether that’s walking, dancing around the kitchen, yoga, swimming or a gym session… it all counts.
Nourishing my body with foods that love me back. Plenty of protein to help repair my body and keep me fuller for longer, alongside slow-release carbohydrates to support steady blood sugar, stable energy and a calmer mood.
The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is this…
You don’t need to be strong all of the time.
You don’t need to earn rest.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is reach for the tools that help you feel safe, grounded and supported.
So if this week has felt heavy, please be gentle with yourself.
One breath.
One step.
One nourishing choice at a time.
You’ve got this… and if you need someone to walk alongside you for a while, I’m here.
Saturday Self-Care
Today is all about the reset.
For the first time since Easter, I had a lie-in.
No alarm. No rushing .No expectations. No external pressure.
And do you know what? It felt wonderful.
It got me thinking about boundaries.
So often, it’s only when illness, injury, burnout or a big life change forces us to slow down that we begin to see what really matters.
Sometimes our biggest lessons arrive in the quiet.
This week has felt like too much for my body and my mind.
Over the years, I’ve learnt not to ignore those signs anymore.
Instead, I become curious.
I ask myself: What’s out of alignment? What am I carrying that isn’t mine? What is my body trying to tell me?
Our bodies are incredibly wise. They often whisper long before they shout.
As many of you know, I’m in the middle of moving house. Even when it’s something we’ve chosen, moving can stir up excitement, uncertainty, grief, hope and fear…all at the same time!
That’s completely normal.
Our brains are designed to keep us safe. When life feels unfamiliar, they can switch us into fight, flight or freeze, making us feel overwhelmed, emotional or constantly on edge.
This is why having a toolkit to calm your nervous system is so important.
When we gently activate our parasympathetic nervous system, our body’s natural rest, restore and repair mode, we help slow our breathing, relax tense muscles, quiet a busy mind and create the conditions where healing can begin.
For some, that’s a walk in nature. For others, it’s journaling, breathwork, meditation or a warm bath.
And for many of my clients, it’s receiving an Aromatherapy Massage, Reflexology or Reiki.
Yes, the treatments are deeply relaxing…
But the real magic often happens in the safe, nurturing space that is created.
A space where you don’t have to hold it all together. A space where you’re heard without judgement. A space where we gently untangle what’s really weighing you down.
Because healing isn’t just about easing sore muscles.
It’s about helping you reconnect with yourself.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, perhaps today is your invitation to pause.
Not because you’ve earned it…
But because you need it.
What does your version of a reset look like today?
Sunday Reset
Sundays have become my gentle reminder that slowing down is just as important as moving forwards.
This weekend, I’ve been reminded that rest isn’t something we have to earn.
It’s something we need.
When life feels busy, uncertain or emotionally heavy, our first instinct is often to keep going, keep doing and keep holding everything together.
However, what if we paused instead?
What if we asked ourselves:
What do I need today?
What’s within my control?
What can I let go of before a new week begins?
As many of you know, I’m in the middle of moving house, and it’s brought a whole mix of emotions. Excitement, uncertainty, hope and moments of feeling overwhelmed.
Instead of fighting those feelings, I’m learning to lean in and listen to them.
Our bodies are incredibly wise. They often tell us we need to slow down long before our minds catch up.
Whether your reset today is a walk in nature, a long bath, reading a book, cuddling the dog, enjoying a quiet cup of tea or booking yourself some much needed time for a massage, reflexology or Reiki, know that it all counts.
Every small act of self-care sends your nervous system the same message:
You are safe. You are supported. You can soften.
As we head into a new week, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to begin it feeling nourished, not depleted.
Love and Light,
